Soft Autumn outfits: clothing from the color palette

Turn a palette into a closet: which neutrals to buy first, four outfits by occasion, a matrix of twenty combinations from nine pieces, and what replaces black, navy and grey.

Updated
A first Soft Autumn capsule as a flat lay, drawn from palette colors: coat, knit, tops, trousers, skirt, blazer, scarf and bag. No piece here is strong enough to clash with another.

Reading a palette as clothes

Forty colors don’t all do the same job. People searching for a Soft Autumn clothing palette usually have the swatches already, and what they’re missing is what to buy. Our board comes in five groups, and each group tends to play one role.

How light and how strong each group is on average, computed from our palette. The roles are our judgment.
GroupDepthStrengthWhere it goes
Neutralslight to mediumvery mutedCoats, trousers, bags, the things you buy once

MidsmediumsoftTops near your face. The season shows most here.

Accentsmediumfairly clearScarves, knits and shoes: small amounts, strong for this palette

So a Soft Autumn’s strongest clothes are still quiet: even the accents are only fairly clear on average, and Brick Rose tops the board. A garment much stronger than that isn’t necessarily wrong. It will just be the first thing anyone sees.

Which neutrals to buy first

Camel is the obvious first buy. We counted instead. A neutral earns its place by going with the rest of your closet, so for each one we measured how many other colors on the board sit in a comfortable contrast range against it.

Fig. 1For each of the eight Soft Autumn neutrals, how many of the other 39 colors on our board sit between 1.4 and 4.5 to 1 against it: enough contrast to see the edge, without a sharp one. The band is our judgment. The count isn't.

The mid-dark browns and olives win, and that makes sense: they’re far enough from the lights to anchor them and close enough to the deeps to blend with them. Soft Brown and Olive Grey top the list, so that’s where we’d put the trouser budget. The count doesn’t cover everything. Soft Cream comes near the bottom because it’s so light, and you still need it, because it does white’s job and nothing else on the board can. Soft Camel sits mid-table, a fine coat that doesn’t pair with quite as much as its reputation says.

Our buying order, then:

  1. Soft Brown or Olive Grey, in trousers or a skirt.
  2. Soft Cream, in a shirt or knit, replacing white.
  3. Soft Camel or Warm Taupe, in a coat or blazer, since a big piece in a mid tone sits gently on everything.
  4. Cocoa Brown, once you need a dark for shoes and a bag.

Three formulas, four occasions

You can build most of a week from three shapes of outfit:

  • Neutral, neutral, one mid near the face. The workhorse. It looks finished, and it costs you one colored top.
  • Earth and its cool note. Muted Teal with sand or brown. This palette has only a few cool colors, so one goes a long way. It’s the combination that looks least like every other autumn outfit.
  • Tonal, in one hue family. Rosewood into mahogany into cocoa. These contrast numbers sit near 1, so the outfit reads as one long color, and fabric does the rest.

Fig. 2Four outfits from our Soft Autumn palette, by occasion. Each block is drawn with the layer on top, then the main piece, then what's below it, sized by roughly how much of you each covers. The number is the main piece against the one below it, on the 1 to 21 contrast scale.

These are complete outfits, and each block gives the colors by name so you can search your own closet. For the contrast numbers: Salmon over Cocoa Brown is the strongest pairing in the set, and still a fraction of what black and white would be. A wedding guest outfit in a pale color with a Jade Moss jacket looks dressed up without leaving the palette, and that’s useful because formal dress codes tend to assume black or navy.

A capsule, measured

A capsule wardrobe is older than most people assume. Publications used the term for small sets of coordinated clothes in the 1940s, Susie Faux revived it at her London boutique in the 1970s, and Donna Karan made it famous in 1985. The idea suits a muted palette, because almost nothing in it can clash.

Fig. 3Five tops across, four bottoms down: twenty outfits from nine pieces, each with its contrast ratio. The two squares are the top and the bottom. Numbers near 1 are tonal, and higher numbers have more of an anchor. Black on white is about 18.

That’s 9 pieces and 20 outfits, running from 1.0 to 6.7 to 1. The pairs near 1 are worth noticing. They read as a single tone from across a room, so give them a change of texture, such as a knit over a washed cotton. The ones above about 4 have a clear dark anchor, and those are the most formal of the set. Copy the hexes below to compare against what you own.

The capsule, and your first neutrals

What replaces black, and what about navy and grey?

The palette page covers black and white. Two defaults get less attention: navy and mid grey, the other things a shop assumes you want. Both are colder than this palette, and both have a warm stand-in at the same job. A cold mid grey at the neck can leave warm skin looking yellow, the same trouble our avoid list describes for Icy Pink.

Fig. 4Five wardrobe defaults, each beside the Soft Autumn color that does the same job. The defaults here are generic colors for comparison and aren't taken from any brand.

The fashion school Academia SISA is right that a closet with several neutrals is more flexible than one built on black. You don’t need to throw anything out, though. Keep any cold piece you love for the lower half of your body, or put Dusty Peach or Soft Gold between it and your face.

How to shop for it online

The palette page has the in-store advice. Online has its own traps, because you’re comparing a screen with a screen.

  1. Put the swatch beside the photo. Open this page’s hex block or the palette image next to the product. Colors shift according to what’s beside them, and a white shop background makes everything look stronger.
  2. Look at the shadow side. Product photos are edited, but the folds usually tell the truth about temperature. If the shadows look blue or grey, the garment leans cold.
  3. Don’t filter by color name. “Rust”, “mustard” and “olive” cover everything from Soft Rust to something twice as strong. Search those words, then judge the picture.
  4. Favor these fabric words. Washed, garment-dyed, heathered, brushed and suede all tend to lower the apparent strength of a color.
  5. Buy two and return one. Until you know a brand, order the color you expect and the one next to it. Then decide by a window. Academia SISA and House of Colour both come back to the same point: natural daylight is the fair test.

Test it on your face

Whatever arrives, the final check is under your chin in daylight. To check the season itself, run the scan: it reads your own face and shows your colors beside your photo, with nothing drawn on you. It can’t predict a real dye. If you aren’t sure this is your season at all, the season test checks your two nearest seasons with color rounds. Soft Autumn makeup matches the colors above, and the Full Color Report includes a capsule wardrobe plan for your own palette.

Common questions

What should a Soft Autumn wear?
Muted, warm clothes built on soft brown, olive grey and camel, with soft cream instead of white. Put salmon, sage or muted teal near your face. Keep the strongest colors, such as soft mustard, to a scarf or a single knit.
What replaces black for a Soft Autumn?
Cocoa brown for most jobs. Soft mahogany when you want something formal, and forest moss or faded deep teal when brown feels too obvious. For navy, use warm slate teal.
Which neutrals should a Soft Autumn buy first?
Soft Brown or Olive Grey for trousers, since each sits comfortably against 29 of the other colors on our board. Then soft cream to replace white, then a camel or warm taupe coat.
Can a Soft Autumn wear navy?
Dark navy is colder than anything on this palette, but it's not a disaster on your legs. Near your face, warm slate teal or faded deep teal do the same job and sit more gently against warm skin.
How do I shop online for Soft Autumn colors?
Put a swatch next to the product photo on your screen, look at the shadow side of folds for a cold lean, and ignore color names like rust and olive, which vary widely. Buy with easy returns, and make the final call by a window.
What does a Soft Autumn wear to a wedding?
A light warm dress such as pale apricot or peach beige with a jade moss jacket, or antique rose and old gold. They look dressed up without black or bright satin. Add soft gold or rose gold jewelry in a brushed finish.
