Cool Summer celebrities (True Summer): who and why
Cool Summer and True Summer are usually one season, and we merge them here. These are the people commonly typed that way, with a source for each, and the many also called Soft Summer.
Is True Summer the same list?
Usually yes, with an exception worth knowing. Here’s how each list we read words it:
| List | What it prints |
|---|---|
| FRANKIE4 | “True Summer (otherwise known as a Cool Summer)” |
| MyStyleBox | “True (Cool) Summer” |
| Roberta Style Lee | Cool Summer in the guide, “True Summer Celebrities” as the heading above the names |
| Soul of Color, PersonalColorAI | True Summer |
| Season Approved | Cool Summer |
| Palette Hunt | A Cool Summer roster and a separate True Summer roster, with different people on each |
The exception is the 16-season system. Agile Styling treats Cool Summer as one of four added seasons, so there it really isn’t True Summer. Most people who search for either term mean the same thing, so we count both as one, and the Cool Summer palette has the fuller naming story. If the system behind your own result matters to you, check it there first.
Who gets typed Cool Summer
Across the lists we read, 81 people are placed here, 43 can be cross-checked and 4 hold on every list. The steadiest names are Caitriona Balfe (Soul of Color, Brigette’s Newsletter, MyStyleBox and Ranker); and Allison Williams (Soul of Color, MyStyleBox and Ranker). The most repeated is Emily Blunt (Soul of Color, Season Approved, Brigette’s Newsletter, MyStyleBox, Truth is Beauty and Ranker), who gets six publishers and one dissent. PersonalColorAI lists her as Soft Summer, then notes that a few analysts argue True Summer.
Close behind are Catherine, Princess of Wales (Season Approved, FRANKIE4, Brigette’s Newsletter and Roberta Style Lee) and Olivia Wilde (Soul of Color, FRANKIE4, Brigette’s Newsletter and MyStyleBox). Soul of Color puts Catherine in Soft Summer, Season Approved does the same for Olivia Wilde, and those are exactly the kind of split Fig. 1 collects. One list here is a popularity vote: Ranker’s list says it’s ordered by its voters, which tells you who people find believable rather than who has been checked.
Other names rest on one list, including Anna Kendrick (Soul of Color); Barbara Palvin (Soul of Color); Carey Mulligan (Season Approved); Sarah Paulson (Season Approved); Lady Gaga (Palette Hunt); and Alison Brie (MyStyleBox).
Why one famous name can land anywhere
Take Taylor Swift. Palette Hunt has her in Cool Summer, PersonalColorAI in Light Summer, and both Season Approved and Soul of Color in Light Spring. That’s a summer and a spring, cool and warm, for someone with no shortage of photos to judge from. More pictures don’t seem to settle it, which suggests pictures aren’t the right evidence.
Here are the names most often split around this season, and who says what:
| Person | Placed here by | Placed elsewhere |
|---|---|---|
| Emily Blunt | Soul of Color, Season Approved, Brigette’s Newsletter, MyStyleBox, Truth is Beauty and Ranker | Soft Summer (PersonalColorAI) |
| Olivia Wilde | Soul of Color, FRANKIE4, Brigette’s Newsletter and MyStyleBox | Soft Summer (Season Approved) |
| Catherine, Princess of Wales | Season Approved, FRANKIE4, Brigette’s Newsletter and Roberta Style Lee | Soft Summer (Soul of Color) |
| Dakota Johnson | Soul of Color | Soft Summer (Season Approved, PersonalColorAI) |
| Rachel McAdams | Season Approved | Soft Summer (Soul of Color, PersonalColorAI) |
Why Cool Summer and Soft Summer lists overlap
We found 16 people who land in both seasons on different lists, all in Fig. 1. It makes sense when you look at how close the two are. Both get described as cool, and neither is dark. In our palettes, Cool Summer is about twice as vivid as Soft Summer, while their warmth differs only a little. So the question lists are really answering is how much color someone can carry, which photographs are poor at showing.
The analyst at Truth is Beauty sets out the reasoning on this exact question for two actors. Each is tried against black, warm colors and blonde hair, and the Cool or Soft question is settled on small signs, such as one person being “less overwhelmed by black”. Even that post describes Summer subtypes as hard to separate on a screen. Few lists show that much work. Most print a name and move on. The full palette comparison is on True Summer vs Soft Summer.
What hair dye does to these calls
Soul of Color describes True Summer hair as medium to dark brown, “around a level 3-6”, and Soft Summer hair as a level 4 to 7. Those ranges share levels 4, 5 and 6, so hair couldn’t separate these two even if it were undyed. And plenty isn’t. Truth is Beauty says bluntly that “most Hollywood blonde is artificial”, and Brigette’s Newsletter introduces one True Summer comparison with “this comparison is more about hair color than anything else.”
Soul of Color adds a useful detail. Fair skin suggests blonde should work on a True Summer, yet “oftentimes, though, blonde washes them out.” So a famous face might be a cool-haired brunette underneath a decade of highlights. That makes the hair in any given photo a weak clue, and the Soft Summer page shows the effect in numbers.
What the lists say Cool Summers share
Setting names aside, the descriptions line up well: a cool undertone, some contrast but not a Winter’s amount, and colors on the muted side. Kettlewell Colours describes ashy mid-brown hair and grey or blue eyes as the classic look, while saying “not always”, and adds that a black and white photo wouldn’t show extreme contrast. Soul of Color says the best way to spot one is to see how they look in soft blues, muted pinks, silvers and grays. These are descriptions of a pattern, and no list offers proof that any named person fits it. We aren’t adding our own opinion on anyone, and nobody here has any connection to this site.
Cool Summer men
Matt Bomer (Soul of Color and Ranker) has two lists behind him and nobody against. Paul Mescal (Soul of Color and Palette Hunt) is Soft Summer at Season Approved. After that it gets scattered: Cillian Murphy (Soul of Color) is Cool Winter at Season Approved and Light Summer at Palette Hunt, and Henry Cavill (Soul of Color) is Cool Winter at Season Approved and Deep Winter at PersonalColorAI. Hugh Grant (Soul of Color); and David Corenswet (Soul of Color) are on one list.
Test the difference on yourself
Hold a clear rose and a periwinkle under your chin in daylight, then a dusty rose and a dusty periwinkle. That comparison is the one that matters: do you want the color at full strength, or does it get ahead of you? If you aren’t sure you’re a summer at all, start at the season test.

- Who are Cool Summer celebrities?
- Lists agree most on Caitriona Balfe and Allison Williams. Emily Blunt is the most repeated name, and Olivia Wilde and Catherine, Princess of Wales are close behind, each with one list placing them in Soft Summer. None of these is confirmed.
- Is True Summer the same as Cool Summer?
- On most lists, yes. FRANKIE4 says so directly. In a 16-season system they're different, and one app keeps two separate rosters, so check the system if your result came with a printed palette.
- Why do Cool Summer and Soft Summer lists share so many names?
- Both are cool and neither is dark, so they differ mostly in how much color they carry. That's hard to judge from a photo. Hair doesn't help either, since the hair ranges described for each overlap.
- Does a Cool Summer have to be blonde?
- No. Soul of Color describes medium to dark brown hair with an ashy quality and says blonde often washes this season out. A famous blonde typed Cool Summer may well have darker hair underneath.
