Cool Winter celebrities (True Winter): who and why
People commonly typed as Cool Winter, also called True Winter, with a source for each. Lists mix the three winters more than any other family, so the names are shown side by side.
Cool Winter
medium, clear
Deep Winter
medium to deep, fairly clear
True Winter the same?
Yes, on the lists we read. FRANKIE4 writes “Cool Winter (True Winter)”, Roberta Style Lee uses both words in one guide, and Soul of Color prints True Winter for the same position. As with the other seasons, a 16-season system may treat Cool Winter as its own palette. For a celebrity list, that distinction won’t change much.
Who gets typed Cool Winter
80 people get this label from someone, 40 can be cross-checked and 6 hold everywhere. All of it is other sites’ guesswork, passed on here with a link. We don’t type real people, and none of them has any connection to us. Names with nobody against them, each on two lists: Alexandra Daddario (Soul of Color and Palette Hunt); Brooke Shields (Soul of Color and Roberta Style Lee); Jennifer Connelly (Soul of Color and Season Approved); Liv Tyler (Soul of Color and Season Approved); and Zooey Deschanel (Soul of Color and FRANKIE4).
Anne Hathaway (Soul of Color, Season Approved, FRANKIE4 and Roberta Style Lee) has the most support, and PersonalColorAI is the lone voice for Deep Winter. Lily Collins (Season Approved, Palette Hunt and FRANKIE4) is Bright Winter at Soul of Color, which adds “possibly Bright Spring.” On one list so far: Helen Mirren (Roberta Style Lee); Audrey Tautou (Soul of Color); Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Soul of Color); Sandra Bullock (Season Approved); and Alia Bhatt (Palette Hunt).
Why lists mix this with Deep and Bright Winter
Read Fig. 1 across the three columns: names in blue also sit in another winter on some other list, and we count 27 of them. Selena Gomez (Soul of Color and FRANKIE4) is also Bright Winter at Season Approved and Deep Winter at PersonalColorAI. Katy Perry (Roberta Style Lee) is Bright Winter at Soul of Color, Season Approved and PersonalColorAI. Demi Moore (Soul of Color and Roberta Style Lee) is Deep Winter at PersonalColorAI.
Design Dash says it directly: “there is still debate between color consultants over which celebrities are true winters and which are bright winters.” Soul of Color lists Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Soul of Color) under both True and Deep Winter without comment.
On paper these three should be easy to split. In our palettes, Bright Winter is clearly the most vivid of the three on average and Deep Winter the darkest, with Cool Winter between them on both. Those are clear differences between palettes, not between people. The trouble is what you’d have to see to place a person: Soul of Color says “Bright Winters are a rare bird” who can “truly pull off bright colors”, and how a saturated color behaves on skin is exactly what a professionally lit and edited photo smooths over. Our Cool Winter palette page goes through the numbers for this one in full.
Here are the names that travel, with who says what:
| Person | Placed here by | Placed elsewhere |
|---|---|---|
| Selena Gomez | Soul of Color and FRANKIE4 | Bright Winter (Season Approved); Deep Winter (PersonalColorAI); Soft Autumn (Palette Hunt) |
| Anne Hathaway | Soul of Color, Season Approved, FRANKIE4 and Roberta Style Lee | Deep Winter (PersonalColorAI) |
| Lily Collins | Season Approved, Palette Hunt and FRANKIE4 | Bright Winter (Soul of Color) |
| Katy Perry | Roberta Style Lee | Bright Winter (Soul of Color, Season Approved, PersonalColorAI) |
| Demi Moore | Soul of Color and Roberta Style Lee | Deep Winter (PersonalColorAI) |
| Catherine Zeta-Jones | Roberta Style Lee | Deep Winter (Soul of Color, FRANKIE4) |
What lists look for in each winter
Whatever you make of the names, Soul of Color’s descriptions are a usable map. We’ve shortened them here. These are descriptions of the convention, and we aren’t claiming them for anyone named on this page.
| Cool Winter | Deep Winter | Bright Winter | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main trait | Crisp and fully cool | Deep coloring, with a hint of coolness | Can truly pull off bright colors |
| Hair | Dark and cool, levels 1 to 5 | Usually jet black or brown-black, levels 1 to 3 | Usually jet black or brown-black, levels 1 to 3 |
| Eyes | Cool and clear, icy blue to cool brown to green | Dark brown or black-brown, sometimes deep green, blue or hazel | Striking in some way, whatever the color |
| Skin | Fully cool, quite a bit lighter than the hair | Dark to medium, cool to neutral | Light to dark, cool to neutral, with a glow |
| Sister season | True Summer | Deep Autumn | Bright Spring |
Notice how much of that overlaps. Deep and Bright Winter share the same hair description word for word, so hair alone can’t tell them apart, even before any dye. And Cool Winter’s “lighter than the hair” is exactly what the Deep Winter page questions at deep skin depths.
The other way out: True Summer
Lists also split upward, into Summer. Soul of Color calls True Summer this season’s sister and says that it “can sometimes be difficult to differentiate” them, then shows it: Soul of Color marks Margaret Qualley and Marion Cotillard as True Summer, “sometimes analysed as True Winter”, and lists Josh O’Connor in both sections. We found five people split between these two seasons across publishers, such as Cillian Murphy (Season Approved) against Soul of Color for Cool Summer, and Alexis Bledel (Soul of Color) against Season Approved. The Cool Summer page has the other half.
Icy and high contrast, across skin tones
Soul of Color describes dark, cool hair and light skin, then says the real test is “to see how they look in cobalt, cool red, magenta, emerald green, silvers and black.” That second part travels better than the first. A description built around pale skin and dark hair can’t cover everyone these lists call winter. Roberta Style Lee presents Naomi Campbell, “contrary to what you might expect”, as “a great example of a Cool Winter.”
So look at how a person handles those colors, and at the contrast inside the face, including the eye. The Deep Winter page shows why hair against skin alone misleads at deep skin depths. It applies here as well. We don’t sort these names by skin tone, for the reasons given there.
Cool Winter men
Most of these come from a single list: George Clooney (Soul of Color); Kit Harington (Soul of Color); Ben Barnes (Soul of Color); and Andrew Scott (Soul of Color). Where a second list exists, it often disagrees. Ian Somerhalder (Soul of Color) is Cool Summer at Season Approved, and Hudson Williams (Soul of Color) is Deep Winter at Palette Hunt.
Sort out the winters on yourself
Hold colors from each in turn under your chin in daylight: Cool Winter, Deep Winter and Bright Winter. Look for three different things. On Cool Winter, do the icy lights and silver look clean on you? On Deep, do you hold up to near-black depth? On Bright, can you carry the strongest color without it arriving first? The season test reads your skin, eyes and hair from your camera, corrects the light with white paper, and shows your season, palette and colors beside your photo.

- Who are Cool Winter celebrities?
- Lists agree on Alexandra Daddario, Brooke Shields, Jennifer Connelly, Liv Tyler and Zooey Deschanel. Anne Hathaway has the most support overall, with one list saying Deep Winter. Nobody has confirmed any of these typings.
- Is True Winter the same as Cool Winter?
- On the lists we read, yes. They're two names for the same position in a 12-season system. Some 16-season systems use Cool Winter for a separate palette.
- Why do lists mix up Cool, Deep and Bright Winter?
- They share a cool base and high contrast. Telling them apart depends on how much depth or brightness someone can carry, and that's hard to judge from lit, edited photos. Even consultants disagree, as Design Dash notes.
- Can someone with deep skin be a Cool Winter?
- Yes. The season describes a cool base and how strong color behaves on you. Hair against skin is only one kind of contrast and shrinks at deep skin depths, so a description built on pale skin doesn't define the season.
