Deep Winter celebrities (Dark Winter): who and why
Names commonly typed as Deep Winter, also called Dark Winter, each with its source. Plus why the same actor can be Deep Autumn elsewhere, and what high contrast means at deep skin depths.
Who gets typed Deep Winter
Soul of Color opens its list honestly: “Most celebrities have not been verified by color analysts, but we can speculate.” That’s the right frame for every name here, and we add no opinion of our own: nobody named has been through our tools or has anything to do with us. 79 people are typed Deep Winter by somebody, 45 can be checked against a second publisher, and 4 hold everywhere.
Nobody disagrees on: Priyanka Chopra (Season Approved, PersonalColorAI, Palette Hunt and FRANKIE4); and Dev Patel (Soul of Color and Season Approved).
Mostly here, with one list elsewhere: Dua Lipa (Soul of Color, Season Approved, PersonalColorAI and Palette Hunt), though FRANKIE4 says Bright Winter, and Soul of Color itself hedges with “possibly Bright Winter”. Jenna Ortega (Soul of Color, PersonalColorAI and Palette Hunt), with Season Approved saying Cool Winter. Catherine Zeta-Jones (Soul of Color and FRANKIE4), with Roberta Style Lee saying Cool Winter too. Mila Kunis (Soul of Color and FRANKIE4), with Season Approved going all the way to Cool Summer.
On one list so far: Monica Bellucci (Soul of Color); Rosalía (Soul of Color); Nina Dobrev (Soul of Color); Viola Davis (Season Approved); Diana Ross (Season Approved); Michelle Yeoh (Season Approved); Sandra Oh (Season Approved); and Sofia Carson (PersonalColorAI). A single typing tells you one person’s view of some photos, no more.
Why your favorite actor is Deep Autumn somewhere else
Soul of Color lists Deep Autumn as this season’s sister, and says it “can be a bit tricky” to tell them apart, which the lists bear out. Salma Hayek (Soul of Color and PersonalColorAI) is Deep Autumn at Season Approved. Kim Kardashian (Season Approved, PersonalColorAI and FRANKIE4) is Deep Autumn at Soul of Color, and that’s before you reach her other two seasons. Going the other way, Soul of Color, Season Approved and Brigette’s Newsletter have Penélope Cruz as Deep Autumn while FRANKIE4 has her here.
Both seasons are dark, so the disagreement is about temperature. And Deep Autumn isn’t the only pull: the winters mix with each other too, which the Cool Winter page maps out. The warm side is on Deep Autumn celebrities, with a chart of who lands where.
Here are some of the names pulled between the winters and Deep Autumn, with who says what:
| Person | Placed here by | Placed elsewhere |
|---|---|---|
| Lupita Nyong'o | Season Approved and PersonalColorAI | Bright Winter (PersonalColorAI) |
| Megan Fox | PersonalColorAI | Bright Winter (Soul of Color, Season Approved, FRANKIE4) |
| Gal Gadot | Soul of Color | Bright Winter (Season Approved); Deep Autumn (PersonalColorAI) |
| Timothée Chalamet | Season Approved and PersonalColorAI | Cool Summer (Brigette’s Newsletter) |
| Angelina Jolie | Season Approved and PersonalColorAI | Soft Autumn (Soul of Color, Brigette’s Newsletter) |
A publisher that disagrees with itself
PersonalColorAI runs both a Deep Winter article and a database of 110 celebrities, and on the day we read them they didn’t match. The article lists four people the database places elsewhere: Rihanna and Lupita Nyong’o as Bright Winter, Kim Kardashian as True Winter, Natalie Portman as True Summer.
We don’t mention this to pick on them. They’re open about their readings and publish the data under a license that made this comparison possible. It’s useful because it’s the same publisher, the same method and the same person, read twice, and still two answers. That gives you a sense of the margin of error on every list here. Soul of Color does it as well, with Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Soul of Color) sitting in both its Deep and True Winter sections.
High contrast doesn’t mean the same thing at every depth
Deep Winter gets described as high contrast, and the usual picture is dark hair against lighter skin. Soul of Color writes that the hair “gives their face nice contrast.” Curate Your Style says “particularly between dark hair and lighter skin, or between the iris and the whites of the eyes.” The second half of that sentence is what most people forget.
Fig. 1 shows why. Hold one near-black hair color against all ten swatches of the Monk scale. The gap in lightness starts at 86 points on tone 1 and falls to 7 on tone 10. Measure this season by hair against skin alone and nearly everyone with deep skin reads as low contrast, which is plainly wrong: the dark iris against the white of the eye is still about 50 points at every depth.
Our own scan was built around this problem. It judges clarity against what’s typical at your skin depth and adds the eye, so deep skin isn’t scored as flat by default. These are sample colors, though, not measurements of anyone, and any single gap is a rough guide.
Examples across skin tones
People ask for this, so here’s the honest version. The season’s definition doesn’t depend on skin depth: Soul of Color says “dark to medium”, and Curate Your Style says the deep seasons span the full range of skin tones. The names above reflect that. What we won’t do is sort these real people into columns by skin. That would mean guessing at someone’s body from edited photos, and it would imply that how light your skin is decides your season, which no definition here says. If you want to see how the fabric sits on your skin, use your own face.
Deep Winter or Dark Winter?
FRANKIE4 heads its section “Deep Winter (Dark Winter)”, and PersonalColorAI calls them “two names for the same season.” Most lists agree and this page merges the two. The usual caution applies from Agile Styling, whose 16-season system maps Dark Winter to a Deep Winter palette that may not be identical. That matters if you have a printed fan, and hardly at all for a celebrity list.
Deep Winter men
Dev Patel (Soul of Color and Season Approved) is the steadiest. Adam Driver (Soul of Color); Colin Farrell (Soul of Color); Penn Badgley (Soul of Color); and Enrique Iglesias (Soul of Color) rest on one list. Zayn Malik (Soul of Color) is Bright Winter at Season Approved, and Timothée Chalamet (Season Approved and PersonalColorAI) is True Summer at Brigette’s Newsletter, which shows how far a single name can travel.
Black as a test, on you
Soul of Color’s claim is strong: “Winters are the only season who truly suit black, and the color black was made for Deep Winter in particular.” Treat that as one analyst’s rule of thumb. It does give you something to try. Hold black under your chin in daylight, then a warm espresso. If black sharpens your features and the brown goes flat, that leans winter. If black leaves shadows and the brown settles, look at autumn.
You can also run the scan, which reads your skin, eyes and hair from your camera and shows your season and colors beside your photo. For the colors themselves, see the Deep Winter palette, or take the season test from the top if you aren’t sure this is your season at all.

- Who are Deep Winter celebrities?
- The names every list we read agrees on are Priyanka Chopra and Dev Patel. Dua Lipa, Jenna Ortega and Catherine Zeta-Jones are commonly typed here with one list disagreeing. None of these typings has been confirmed by the person.
- Why is my favorite actor typed Deep Autumn on another site?
- The two seasons share depth and differ on temperature, and temperature is hard to read in dark coloring and easy for light to fake. Several people are on both lists, so a split like that tells you about the photos as much as the person.
- Does a Deep Winter have to have fair skin for contrast?
- No. Hair against skin is only one kind of contrast, and it shrinks at deep skin depths. The eye holds its own contrast at every depth, which is one reason lists describe this season across the full range of skin.
- Is Dark Winter a different season from Deep Winter?
- In 12-season systems they're two names for one season. In a 16-season system Deep Winter can be its own palette, so a printed fan from that system may not match a 12-season board exactly.
